'Boardwalk Empire' Recap: Georgia Peaches

S2E10: It's funny. I was just saying how Angela might very well be my favorite character on all of Boardwalk Empire. And then, this happens...

"How them new shoes be fitting these days?" – Chalky
"A little tighter than expected." – Jimmy

After only a few weeks of unofficial reign over Atlantic City, Jimmy Darmody has managed to lose the favor of just about every character on Boardwalk Empire. This week's episode, "Georgia Peaches," makes an effort to explore the friendless world that the man has built for himself. It seems that a poetic justice has imparted itself unto Jimmy in return for his betrayal of Nucky. Last week, we saw hints that even Richard might be beginning to lose his worship for Jimmy. This week, we see both the "up-and-comers" (Al Capone, Meyer Lansky, Lucky Luciano and Mickey Doyle) and the business heads (Eli Thompson and Jimmy's father, the Commodore, included—and to a subtler extent, Mr. Whitlock) express an antagonism towards their far-from-competent leader, Jimmy.

Capone and co. are unhappy with Jimmy because, thanks to Nucky's secretive business dealings, none of them can sell any liquor in Atlantic City. So, they are forced to high-tail it elsewhere (heading to New York, Chicago, Philadelphia…and Jimmy, as we learn at the end of the episode, heads back to his college town, Princeton). Also sparking some animosity is Jimmy's dismissal of Meyer's and Lucky's proposal to sell heroin—a plan in which they are both heavily invested.

"Do what we're paying you to do. End this." – Business head
The business heads are meanwhile fed up with Jimmy's inability to handle Atlantic City's black community's strike, provoked last week by a plan set forth by Chalky White and "new friend," Dunn Purnsley. Jimmy suggests the businessmen give into their salary demands and offer nickel raises—however, just about no one is on board with this. Eli proposes a far more popular violent reaction: the strikers are attacked by Billy-club waving bandits, who also impart some wrath onto Deputy Halloran for his none-too-savvy conversation with Esther Randolph last week.

We also get a taste of the black community's distaste for Jimmy, courtesy of his conversation with Chalky. When Jimmy fails to meet just one of Chalky's demands—that is, "justice" brought to the men responsible for the described violence—Chalky insists that the strike will continue through and beyond tourist season.

And, finally, there's Manny: Jimmy's number one enemy right now. Manny knows Jimmy was behind his attempted murder. And Manny was already pretty put off by Jimmy's refusal to pay his debt. So, when Mickey Doyle shows up with an alcohol delivery courtesy of Jimmy, Manny strangles Mickey until he reveals where Manny can find his boss, so that he might take some revenge.

"What's so fascinating?" – Angela
"That fellow. Not a care in the world." – Jimmy

Now, before we get into the last bit of misfortune for Jimmy, I think it's interesting that this episode is notable in its absence of Jimmy's mother, Gillian. Gillian is at once an incredibly supportive and an incredibly destructive figure in regards to Jimmy. While she is unwaveringly in his corner, she is also responsible for provoking some of the less favorable choices he has made, most notably shooting Nucky. Gillian is only mentioned in passing this week—by Angela, she's babysitting Tommy—which is funny in an episode that is almost entirely about the devastation that is becoming of Jimmy. My first thought was, the show wouldn't want to include any character that might be "pro-Jimmy," in this episode (even Richard is barely seen this week). And that might very well be the reasoning. But maybe we're also supposed to accept that Jimmy has become his own destructive force. When we met Jimmy in Season 1, he was an entirely promising individual—intellectually and ethically (at least, within this world). Recently, we've seen the effect his mother has on him. But now, we're perhaps intended to understand that even in the absence of Gillian is Jimmy without hope of redemption. He has become what pulls him downward, he no longer relies on his mother for that.

"The most important thing in life, darling…your health. Your husband did this to you." – Manny
Now, the "big ending." As I said, Angela might well be my favorite Boardwalk character. And because of that, the scene she shares with Jimmy this week is one of my favorites in a long time. Jimmy acknowledges how unhappy she is, and what thoughts she might have of him. But he promises to make things better for her soon—this is just before he heads to Princeton (the town where he started on his bright path—he's going back there to corrupt it…some fun symbolism there), and not long before Manny Horvits breaks into their house, killing Angela as payback for everything Jimmy has done to him.

It's actually the saddest a Boardwalk episode has made me in some time—first, the heartbreaking scene between Jimmy and Angela really wrenches, because we understand (as do they, beneath it all) just how hopeless it is for the two of them to be happy. And then, this tragic figure who still, despite all her tragedy, wants to live…if only for her son…gets killed, thanks to the misdoings of the husband to whom she has been sadly, fearfully and devotedly attached. "Georgia Peaches" really gets to me.

"What would you do, Arnold?" – Nucky
"No one likes a longshot more than a gambler." – Rothstein

Onto Nucky and family. Nucky's business in this episode largely concerns his search for a new lawyer—he fires the lawyer whose hairdo we have come to admire for his inadequacy in making Nucky's case work in any way to his benefit. He then heads to New York to meet a tricky, silver-tongued lawyer named Fallon, recommended by Rothstein.

More personal matters involve the worsening condition of Emily, and Teddy's jealousy of the attention his sister is getting. When Nucky tends to Teddy to remind him that his mother still loves him, Teddy reveals that he knows that Nucky burned down his old house—but that he'll never tell. Meanwhile, Margaret revisits her faith in order to pray for her ailing daughter. She even taps into her stowed away money, donating it to the church in order to earn God's favor, so to speak.

"What should I make sure I never, ever do again?" – Eli
Finally, Esther (free of quips, but still fantastic) rehearses a testimony with Nelson Van Alden, and offers a jailed Eli a deal if he'll cooperate in the trail against Nucky (which I truly don't see why he wouldn't, considering the lack of brotherly love, unless I'm missing some way that this can harm him).

I always prefer when Boardwalk episodes pay tribute to one character in particular as opposed to forwarding six or seven plotlines. "Georgia Peaches" doesn't offer that much in the vein of new information or developments (with Angela's death as the exception), but we really needed to see an episode devoted so strongly to Jimmy's catastrophic downfall. There are suppositions on the rise that he might not be around much longer—but then again, the Princeton tease at the end might indicate otherwise. Either way, getting an illustration of a desperate Jimmy (one so worn out as to be as vulnerable as he was with Angela) is something I highly appreciate.

Prince William Conducts Irish Sea Rescue Mission

Prince William is kind of the man.

Not only is he rich, famous, intelligent, married to a lovely young woman and the heir to the British throne, he's an accomplished pilot in the UK's armed forces - as evidenced during a daring rescue mission he took part in this morning.

William helped save the lives of Russian seamen whose cargo vessel sank into the Irish Sea off the coast of North Wales early today, according to various reports.

Man in Uniform

Known simply as Flight Lt. William Wales in the Royal Air Force, he was co-pilot in a four-man rescue helicopter crew that responded to a mayday call around 2 a.m.

At that point, the vessel Swanland's hull apparently cracked in bad weather.

He and fellow military servicemen saved two men, airlifting them to safety at William's base on the Welsh island of Anglesey, where he lives with Kate Middleton.

The body of one of Swanland's crew has been recovered; five are still missing.

"We know at least some of [the missing] are wearing immersion suits and have strobe lighting with them," Jim Green, a coast guard spokesman, said Sunday. "However, sea conditions are challenging at best."

What is Demi Lovato Thankful For?

Last year at this time, Demi Lovato was in treatment for a number of personal issues.

Therefore, following a 2011 that has seen the singer re-establish herself professionally and recover personally, Lovato has plenty to be thankful for this holiday season.

A Kiss from Demi Lovato

"I could not have done this without God and the amazing support from my family," Demi writes in her monthly Seventeen column. "They have stuck by me through everything and love me just the way that I am. That is a wonderful feeling to know that people accept the real you."

Lovato is currently on tour, promoting the album "Unbreakable" (watch her rendition of "Moves Like Jagger" HERE!), and says she's "thankful for my life path, including the highs and the lows, because it has caused my true self to shine through," adding:

"Going to treatment was a gift and I believe it saved my life. I learned how to be strong and healthy even through struggles. It also helped me open up about my issues and share them with others. Knowing that my family, friends and fans accept me for who I am is the greatest feeling ever!"

Amen, Demi. We wish you continued health and happiness.

Evelyn Lozada: Returning to Basketball Wives, Signed to Chad Ochocinco Wedding Spinoff

Basketball Wives star Evelyn Lozada has been convinced to come back for another season. She's so darn valuable, she was given an insane deal she couldn't pass up.

Evelyn was prepared to leave the VH1 "hit" before its fourth season, but she was given a package that allows her to work less, earn more, and get her own spinoff.

Even a Basketball Wives cast member isn't dumb enough to reject that.

Evelyn Lozada Pic

Earlier this fall, Evelyn had made up her mind that she was done with the show after a VH1 blog post suggested she cheated on her fiance, NFL star Chad Ochocinco.

(Cheated with Terrell Owens, to be exact).

However, once Evelyn Lozada let producers know she was out, they really made a push to keep her. Guess you gotta go all out to keep your prized "talent" in house.

Her new deal requires her to film half as often, with the flexibility to work around her daughter's school schedule and Chad's NFL games, all while getting a big raise.

The icing on the cake? The network promised to spin off Evelyn and Chad into their own show, documenting the months leading up to their wedding. Hallelujah.

Let the J.R. Martinez victory tour begin.

Dancing With the Stars champion J.R. Martinez received an invitation from U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta to visit the Pentagon and meet Panetta in person.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Panetta's respect for J.R., an Iraq War veteran, motivational speaker and actor, was displayed in a congratulatory note:

J.R. and Karina Pic

J.R. and Karina Smirnoff won the ABC competition Monday.

"Your strength and spirit have captivated the nation, and your victory sends a strong message about the strength and resilience of our wounded warriors."

The Defense Secretary then personally called J.R. to invite him to meet in person. J.R. Martinez will address thousands of active and retired troops while in D.C.

It seems everyone wants a piece of the man. Along with his journey to the Pentagon, Martinez has been named the Grand Marshal of the 2012 Rose Parade.

The annual extravaganza takes place New Year's Day. Not only that, the 28-year-old will co-host the pre-show of CNN's Heroes: An All-Star Tribute.

If you're looking for a true inspiration, you could do a lot worse.

Thanksgiving Box Office Report

It was a solid Wednesday start for the Thanksgiving holiday 5-day frame with Summit's "Twilight: Breaking Dawn, Part 1" in 4,061 theaters earning around $12.5 million for the day to take the top spot. The film has earned around $171.5 million in North American since its debut on the 18th and should have well over $200 million in the blood bank by Sunday night.

In second is newcomer "The Muppets" from Disney with a first day tally of $6.6 million in 3,440 theaters and an expected $40 plus million for 5 days. Jason Segal's delightful love letter to The Muppets should be a solid choice for families this weekend and should hold great nostalgia for the parents.

Third place belongs to Warner Bros.' "Happy Feet Two" which earned $2.915 million in its fifth day of release, thus bringing its total to $28.318 million and providing another great family alternative. The film should earn around $20 million for five days and a total closing in on $50 million by Sunday night.

At number four for Wednesday is Sony's magical "Arthur Christmas" with around $2.4 million in Christmas cheer for the day in 3,376 theaters. The film was created by Aardman, the British animation house and with its 3-D imagery will bring in about $15 million plus for the 5-day period. The PG-rated film should play well throughout the holidays with its Christmas theme.

Rounding out the Top Five is Sony's Adam Sandler comedy "Jack and Jill" which will enter its third weekend on Friday and earned about $1.93 million on Wednesday. The PG-rated comedy will play well with entire families looking for a live action comedy for the Thanksgiving frame. With $11 million plus for the 5-days the film should have a total of around $55 million by the end of Sunday.

Outside of the Top 5, Relativity Media's "Immortals" which starts its third weekend on Friday earned around $1.8 million on Wednesday, while Paramount's newcomer "Hugo" in just 1,277 theaters is neck and neck with their own "Puss in Boots" (which enters weekend 5 on Friday) with both in the $1.65 million to $1.66 million range. Universal's "Tower Heist" earned about $1.3 million on Wednesday and nearly $57 million to date.

Other notable films include Warner Bros.' "J. Edgar" with $840,000 on Wednesday in 1,947 theaters with nearly $23 million in Federal Reserve notes to date. Fox Searchlight's acclaimed "The Descendants" (which enters weekend 2 on Friday) inherited $985,000 on Wednesday as it expanded into 390 theaters and its total nears $2.5 million to date.

Weinstein Co.'s excellent "My Week with Marilyn" seduced about $155,000 from audiences in 123 theaters in its first day on Wednesday as it starts its holiday run while Sony Classic's "A Dangerous Method" on its first day takes off with $30,000 in four theaters.

This should be a solid Thanksgiving weekend with a plethora of family films, blockbusters and Oscar contenders to please virtually every audience for this week and beyond.

Kardashian Christmas Special Reports Are 'Completely False,' Says E! Rep

Contrary to other news on Friday, a rep tells THR a holiday special was "never on the schedule."

Keeping Up With the Kardashians 2011
E! Entertainment

The backlash against the Kardashian suite of reality shows may have picked up a lot of steam over the past few weeks, but sorry Kardashian critics, reports that the increasing controversy helped to kill a proposed Christmas special aren't true according to the network.

Marriages

An E! spokesperson tells The Hollywood Reporter that the news is "completely false." In fact, it's impossible to put the kibosh on something that apparently never existed as the spokesperson adds, "This special was never on the schedule."

On Friday, the New York Post's reported that its sources say that the family was in talks with the entertainment cable channel for a televised special with the reality clan ringing in the holidays with its viewers.

According to the newspaper, plans for the special fell apart because the family members had "too many commitments," which made it hard to schedule the program's shooting. Though, the fallout from Kim Kardashian's quickie divorce from Kris Humphries was supposedly the nail in the coffin.

A Kardashian rep had also told the newspaper, "I haven't heard anything about [it]."

A special such as this would probably net plenty of viewers amid all the divorce controversy. The two part Kardashian/Humphries wedding special attracted more than eight million viewers over its two nights.

Nevertheless, fans will get a dose of Kardashian very soon. Kourtney & Kim Take New York returns on Sunday at 10 p.m.

'Iron Lady' Director Responds to Uproar Over Meryl Streep's 'Over-Emotional' Performance

Former colleagues and admirers of Margaret Thatcher have mocked Streep's portrayal of the former British prime minister, but Phyllida Lloyd is unfazed.

This story first appeared in the Dec. 2 issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine.

Director Phyllida Lloyd (Mamma Mia!) is unfazed by the uproar. "People have been arguing about her [Thatcher] for months and months," Lloyd tells THR. "She certainly burns brightly as a still very divisive character."

The movie, made for an estimated $13 million, has been penciled in for a Dec. 30 U.S. release by the Weinstein Co., bowing in exclusive runs in New York and Los Angeles before going wide Jan. 13. It is scheduled to hit U.K. screens Jan. 6 via Pathe's distribution pact with 20th Century Fox.

Set in the present, the film uses flashbacks to depict Thatcher's life from 1979 through 1990 and includes her later battles with dementia. (Thatcher, now 86, lives a very private life in London.)

Much of the opposition to the drama comes from Tory stalwarts and former cabinet ministers who served under Thatcher. None has seen the film, but the movie's trailer -- which mixes elements of gentle comedy with scenes of Thatcher's personal and political life -- was enough to set them off.

Former conservative MP Norman Tebbit wrote in the Daily Telegraph that Thatcher was "never, in my experience, the half-hysterical, over-emotional, over-acting woman portrayed by Meryl Streep."

He also questions why he and others who knew and worked with Thatcher weren't consulted by the filmmakers. (Abi Morgan's script is based on a number of sources, including material from politicians and civil servants on condition of anonymity.) "You might think that if you were setting out to make a so-called 'biopic' about such a dominant figure on the political stage of the late 20th century," Tebbit wrote, "your researchers would have sought out those who were closest to her."

Tim Bell, one of Thatcher's key PR advisers, also has taken exception with the film, describing it as a "non-event" and declaring that he has no interest in seeing it.

U.S. conservatives have been equally critical of Iron Lady ever since an early script was leaked. Andrew Breitbart's BigHollywood.com complained a year ago that the movie features the ghost of Thatcher's late husband, Denis, downplaying his wife's accomplishments, which "would have happened anyway, darling."

"Not one of those people have seen it," Lloyd said. "It's very far from a biopic. You're only seeing some fragments of her political career and life from how it might have been, not how it was."

Whether the controversy helps the film at the box office remains to be seen -- the furor over Oliver Stone's W. sure didn't do that political drama any favors -- but a strong Oscar push is likely given Streep's perennial awards-season dominance and the backing of Harvey Weinstein.

Streep hasn't commented directly on the controversy, telling The Daily Mail that while she didn't agree with many of Thatcher's policies, it was a privilege to delve deeply into her life and play her onscreen.

Lloyd defends her leading lady, adding that Streep's performance was never meant to be mean-spirited or exploitative. "Those of us [on set] who witnessed her both as Thatcher in her prime and as the more fragile old lady saw something I have never experienced before," Lloyd said. "She [Streep] just disappears as an actress and is Thatcher."

POLITICAL DRAMAS AT THE BOX OFFICE: From JFK to J. Edgar, these biopics about political figures have connected

JFK (1991) Oliver Stone

The grassy knoll conspiracy plot enraged supporters of the one-gunman theory but helped JFK win two Oscars and become a global hit. Stone had less luck with his cinematic character assassinations of Nixon (1995) and George W. Bush. (W., 2008). Global Box Office: $205 million

The Queen (2006) Stephen Frears

Focusing on one of the few controversial moments in Queen Elizabeth II's long reign, screenwriter Peter Morgan zeroes in on her reserved public response to the death of Princess Diana. Helen Mirren's classy Queen united royalists, republicans and Oscar voters. Global Box Office: $123.4 million

J. Edgar (2011) Clint Eastwood

Already an Oscar favorite -- Leonardo DiCaprio, as Hoover, seems guaranteed a best actor nom -- J. Edgar is still rolling out at the box office. Domestic Box Office: $20.7 million (still in release)
